My own to-do list is not exactly proof that I have this figured out. Some nights it still wins, and I go to bed with my chest doing that tight, buzzy thing anyway, this many years into doing this work for a living. I used to think that meant the framework didn't work. It doesn't mean that. It means the list was never actually the thing I needed to fix.
This week's episode is about that gap, the fourteen-item list that's actually fourteen things plus the six you're holding in your head because writing them down felt like its own task. It's not about doing more, faster, or getting better at making lists. It's about the exact thought that fires the second you look at it, and why that thought, not the list, is the part you actually get to change.
The Science:
Most of us treat our thoughts like they're describing what's actually happening in front of us. They're not. A thought is an interpretation, not a fact, and an interpretation can be wrong. The list itself is neutral, fourteen lines of text with no feeling built into it. What has a feeling built into it is the thought that shows up the instant you look at it, and that thought, not the list, is what actually produces the tight-chest, buzzy, too-much feeling.
Try This:
A fillable version of this week's exercise, The One Rung Up.
Pick one thing off your list, not the biggest or scariest, just whatever's been sitting there the longest.
_______________
Write the exact thought that fires the second you look at it, in your own words, no softening it.
_______________
Now find one rung up. Not the top of the ladder, just the next believable step. (If the thought is "I'm never going to get to this," one rung up might be "I haven't gotten to this yet.")
_______________
Sit with that new thought for a second. What shifts, even a little, in your body?
_______________
Reflection: Explore how you engage with the task going forward when you practice your new thought.
